The documents of the Austrian photographer Michael Moser (1853-1912) and his stay in early days of Meiji-Japan for 7 years

The Austrian-Hungarian expedition to East Asia dispatched from Trieste in 1868, and concluded treaties with Siam (Thailand), China and Japan in 1869 respectively. As its official photographer, Wilhelm Burger (1844-1920) took part in this expedition in company with Michael Moser (1853-1912) as his assistant. Moser was still 16 years old, when he arrived in Japan. Nevertheless, he decided to stay further in Japan, even after the others including Burger went back to Austria, and stayed in Japan for 7 years all in all.  As a photographer, Moser worked for the fortnight photographic magazine The Far East, edited and published in Yokohama by the Scot, John Reddie Black (1826-1880), and participated the Japanese commission for the World Exhibitions in Vienna in 1873 and in Philadelphia in 1876 as an interpreter. Besides a number of photographs, which show the landscapes and people of the visited countries, in particular Japan, he left diaries (itineraries), letters and essays which tell us his world trips in details and the then political and social conditions of the early days of Meiji-Japan. This paper introduces the outlines of his diaries, letters and essays, which will be published in German as well as Japanese languages
